Almost too cute for words

Continuing on with the cupcake theme, I was perusing the aisles of Barnes and Nobles yesterday (let's not lie, this happens quite often since I'm a huge bookworm ha) and found the most adorable journals. I might have squealed with glee a little bit right then and there! Pink and cute and cupcakes equal success in my book. I seem to collect way too many cute little notebooks on the other hand, but as a writer I need them, right!? Yes, please! to this adorable pink one.

Even better, I discovered the story behind this line. An Etsy seller, Jennys Bake Shop, partnered with Peter Pauper Press to publish these journals and other accessories, which are now sold nationwide at Barnes and Nobles. I love a good success story!

They also sell other desk accessories like this cute note cube.

Cupcake challenge

Happy Monday! It was a very sweet weekend for me. Besides attending the Celebration Pie Festival and sampling all sorts of delicious pies, there was also some cupcake creating.

Most of you have probably heard of the book Hello, Cupcake. It features very artistically-designed cupcakes with easy-to-follow instructions. Many of the cupcakes depict other food items and it's amazing how real it actually looks. All of the ingredients can be found at your local grocery store and the fanciest tool you'll need is a Ziploc bag to pipe out icing. The second book, What's New, Cupcake, is out now as well and in my opinion it's even better than the first. We tried our hand at making the following: spaghetti and meatballs, cherry and blueberry pie and corn on the cob. Yum is all I have to say!

This was my favorite to make and eat.
How real does it look with the Ferrero Rocher "meatballs," strawberry jam "pasta sauce" and white chocolate shavings as "parmesan cheese?"

The pies were a little more difficult because we couldn't get the icing to pipe out straight over the different levels of filling.
The "cherries" and "blueberries" are m&ms.

The corn was another fun one.
The "kernels" are Jelly Bellies and the "butter" is yellow Starbursts.

Overall, I give the books two icing-covered thumbs up! It was a lot of fun to make cupcake creations that look like other foods. Nothing makes people smile quite like a cute cupcake!

Happy Earth Day!

In honor of Earth Day, I thought I'd share a few tips for going green and keeping our planet happy.

One of the easiest steps is to replace paper or plastic bags with reusable bags. There are so many fun styles out there and this trend is really on the up and up. I have the three varieties below. I couldn't resist snapping up each one, but hmm . . . I may need to pick up a few more in each style of the first two so I can have matching sets :) Gotta coordinate!

Lilly Pulitzer - $9.95
Great for Target or CVS runs for the essentials and groceries.

J. Crew - $10.00
Great for library books!
(My store sold out, but they're still available online.)

Sur La Table collapsible market tote - $40
Great for toting groceries home.

Which variety do you have?

Tips for going green:
Visit a farmer's market and buy locally
Use reusable water bottles
Exercise outdoors instead of the gym
Reuse Ziplocs
Eat sustainable food
Trade paper/plastic bags for reusable bags
Eat vegetarian a few times a week
Unplug electronics when not in use
Go digital for banking statements
Share books with friends
Turn off computer when not home or asleep
Turn off lights
Fill up the freezer because it uses less energy when full
Bring lunch in reusable containers
Save gas by emptying your trunk
Bring your own mug to Starbucks
Check air pressure in your tires for fuel efficiency
Get off junk mail lists
Get a library card

By incorporating these tips, we can make a difference a little bit at a time. I do many of these things already, but there are some that I can definitely incorporate and improve upon as well.
Three cheers for taking care of our earth!

Wedding season: Part two

Continuing on with the second part of the wedding season series, it's time to add those accessories. Some dresses may not need many accessories and some may require a whole set to make you dazzle, but whatever the case, the perfect accessories will certainly help you achieve a polished look.

I'm all about earrings. If you have a stunning pair of earrings and coordinating purse and shoes, that's sometimes all you need. Or, some outfits may call for the classic pearls or even a little (or a lot of!) bling.

It's all about accentuating what you've got going on. When I wear a bold print to a shower or event, I try to keep the jewelry to a minimum and go with a more subdued look so the print can do the talking. That's not to say that some dresses won't call for a gorgeous pair of gold dangly earrings! I'm usually all about the pearls when attending a shower, however. I tend to wear flats and carry a neutral purse as well. Many times, it's all about looking classic at these types of gatherings.

Casual Elegance

I do love a good wedding to get the chance to dress up and go all out. If I'm sticking to a solid-colored dress I'll add some bling to spice things up. I tend to coordinate with gold accessories (if it matches, of course). There's nothing like a little sparkly clutch or pair of heels to make you feel your best. This is your chance to let the accessories shine and bring your complete look up to a whole new level of wow-ness. I'll apply my makeup a bit heavier and curl my hair to finish off the glamour style I aim to achieve. After that I'm ready to dance the night away!

I hope you enjoyed these tips and do share any of your own.
Cheers to an eventful wedding season!

Wedding season: Part one

I think it's safe to say wedding season has officially arrived. I have numerous showers and weddings to attend and of course what is the first question to pop into my mind — what dress shall I wear? My mom would be so proud :)

I am now on the lookout for cute dresses to wear to showers and weddings that still fall within the budget. And no, the gorgie dresses below most likely aren't in the budget, but a girl can dream.

Row 1: Maggy London at Nordstrom, Lilly Pulitzer, Lilly Pulitzer
Row 2: Lilly Pulitzer, J. Crew, J. Crew
Row 3: J. Crew, BCBG, BCBG

*Where do you like to shop for your wedding season wardrobe?

When I'm attending showers, I typically like to wear a dress with a fun print and bright colors. I'll pair it with more subdued jewelry since the print makes the statement. If it's a wedding I'm going to, I'll often wear solids and pair it with bold accessories. I think it's OK to stand out at showers, but at weddings I don't want to end up matching the flowers/decor or steal the show from the bride who should be the main event. However, if you do choose a solid, you may want to find out what color the bridesmaids are wearing so that you do not match. Also, if the wedding invitation does not specify the attire, depending on the time of day, mid-day ceremonies are often a little less casual than an evening event. Not sure? It never hurts to ask.

Check back tomorrow for Wedding season: Part Two.

A little edge

I went on a shoe shopping mission over the weekend, determined to branch out. On a typical day you'll find me dressed in ballet flats or sandals and flip flops on the weekend. I am living in Florida, after all. But — I was feeling the need for something edgy, something with a heel. A trendier pair that would make me look like the newly 26-year-old I am. I found the pair for me and am now proudly walking with an extra spring to my step and walking taller, much taller these days. Ahh, there's nothing like a new pair of shoes to make your confidence soar ;)

Mine appear in a lighter shade of tan in person.
Found these at Nine West after being coerced in due to a sale :)

Carrie Bradshaw on a great pair of shoes:
"Sometimes we need really special ones now and then to make the walk a little more fun."

Next week's mission: new hairstyle!

Spring in bloom

I am back from Easter weekend in Callaway Gardens. I had a wonderful time with my family and enjoyed the beautiful spring weather. We were able to pack in quite a bit of fun. Friday night we had a belated birthday celebration for me at a delicious restaurant at the Lodge and enjoyed a pretty pink cake my mom and grandmother made for me. We also dyed Easter eggs that night. Saturday we spent the day biking on the trails and visiting the gorgeous gardens and butterfly house. Later that night we had our traditional Easter egg hunt in the dark with flashlights and I found the golden egg! Sunday we woke up to fun Easter baskets and went to the cutest little church in town. After brunch, I accompanied my dad and bf for a round of golf. After lots of relaxation and beautiful sights, we headed home on Monday. What a fun trip! I do love Easter — especially when I get to see my family.

Me at the Horticultural Center.

The light pink tulips were my favorite.

Butterfly House.

The butterflies were beautiful!

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter weekend as well :)

The gardens are waiting

For most of my childhood, my family and I journeyed south of Atlanta to spend Thanksgiving or Easter at Callaway Gardens. I have so many memories of being there. This year, we decided to go back. It will be the first time we've been in many, many years. I can't wait! I also can't wait to see my family. Callaway Gardens is a resort that has beautiful lakes, mountains, golf, tennis, bike trails, and of course, many beautiful gardens and even a butterfly house. I'm looking forward to being outside and celebrating Easter with the ones I love most.
Have a great weekend!
